Township of Springwater / October 1, 2018 – Springwater Fire & Emergency Services is urging everyone to ‘Look, Listen and Learn’ about fire safety during this year’s Fire Prevention Week, which runs from October 7 -13, 2018.

The theme focuses on three fundamental actions people can take to be fire-safe:

  1. LOOK for potential hazards around you home. Take action to prevent fire from starting:
    • Always stay in the kitchen when cooking. If you must leave, turn off the stove.
    • Encourage smokers to smoke outside. Always extinguish cigarettes in a large, deep ashtray that cannot be knocked over.
    • Check electrical cords for damage such as fraying or nicks. A damaged cord can expose wires and result in a potential shock or fire hazard.
  2. LISTEN for the smoke alarms in an emergency. Make sure everyone knows the sound of the smoke alarms and can hear them in an emergency. Early detection of fire provided by smoke alarms gives you the extra seconds you need to get out safely.
  3. LEARN two ways out of every room. Practice a home fire escape plan with everyone in your home before a fire starts so you and your family can get out quickly.

To help spread the word about fire safety during Fire Prevention Week, Springwater Fire will be hosting Coffee with a Firefighter from 10 am – 12 pm on Friday, October 12, 2018 at McDonalds in Elmvale (68 Yonge Street N). Everyone is welcomed to attend and learn more about the steps they can take to ensure their family is fire-safe.

Firefighters will also be completing home fire safety visits from October 9 -12 to assist homeowners in looking, listening and learning about fire safety in their homes. As a thank you for participating in Fire Prevention Week, participants will receive a Tim Horton’s gift card.  To book a home fire safety visit, Springwater residents are encouraged to call 705-728-4784 Ext. 2047 or email
