Two stations and 23 firefighters responded to the scene and upon arrival discovered approximately three acres of bush on fire.

“The fire was located in a 40 foot ravine; this challenging terrain made accessing the fire difficult, and special forestry equipment was required to do so,” says Jeff French, Interim Deputy Fire Chief. “Firefighters were able to contain the fire within two hours, and will continue to monitor the scene and douse hotspots throughout the day.”

The fire is believed to have started as the result of an open air burn held in June that continued to smolder underground for a number of weeks. The wind and humidity provided the right conditions for the fire to ignite late yesterday.

Residents are reminded to ensure any fire is fully extinguished with plenty of water. The Fire Danger Rating remains at HIGH in Springwater and anyone burning in the Township should use caution and follow the rules listed on their Fire Permit.
