Township of Springwater / April 19, 2017 – Springwater Fire & Emergency Services is looking for Springwater’s oldest smoke or CO alarm and want to give the owner a prize for replacing it.
As part of the annual Alarmed for Life campaign, Springwater Firefighters will be visiting 100 households in May to speak with homeowners about fire safety, checking to ensure homes have an adequate number of detectors and that they are working properly and have not passed their expiration date.
New to the program this year is a prize for the oldest smoke and CO alarm found. All residents are encouraged to check their smoke/CO alarms for an expiration date and if it has expired, replace it with a new alarm. They are then invited to submit their old alarms and the owner of the oldest alarm will win a prize valued at almost $700 dollars, including over $550 in gift certificates donated by businesses in the Elmvale Business Improvement Area (BIA), as well as four green fees at Orr Lake Golf Course.
“The ‘Old for New: Because it Protects You’ contest is a fun way to get people to check the expiration date of their alarms,” says Jeff Corriveau, Springwater Fire Prevention Officer. “Many people don’t realize that the average smoke alarm has a lifespan of 10 years and that most CO alarms only last 5-7 years. If your alarm has passed the expiration date, you are encouraged to change it as soon as possible.”
Any Springwater resident wishing to participate in the contest can drop off their old alarms, with their name and contact information written directly on the alarm, at the Township Administration Centre (2231 Nursery Road) or the Minesing Fire Hall (2303 Ronald Road) during regular business hours. All alarms received will be recycled using the First Alert – Zero Waste initiative. The contest closes on May 31, 2017.
Any Springwater Firefighter participating in the Alarmed for Life program will be wearing a uniform, carry proper identification and will arrive in a Springwater Fire vehicle.
