Springwater Township / June 5, 2016 - At 4:30 pm on Saturday, June 4, 2016 Springwater Fire responded to reports of a grass fire along the rail line at Anne Street North.
Three fire stations responded to the call, with 20 firefighters attending the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered piles of railway ties were burning, creating an abundance of smoke. 7000 gallons of water and foam were used to contain the fire and as a result, just under two (2) acres were burnt. Trains were stopped along the line while crews fought the fire. The Ontario Provincial Police and Simcoe County Paramedics were on scene providing assistance.
"Crews did a great job of containing the fire and keeping it out of the forested area before it could spread and become much larger," says Tony Van Dam, Director of Fire & Emergency Services.
The fire is currently under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to please contact the Canadian Pacific Rail Police at 1-800-716-9132 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
