(SPRINGWATER TOWNSHIP, ON.) – On Wednesday, January 13th, 2016, members of the Huronia West Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a call from a Springwater Twp. resident who advised that during the previous evening persons claiming to be from “Red Cross” were canvassing for money in the Villages of Hillsdale and Phelpston.
An OPP investigation into this matter revealed that the Simcoe Muskoka Red Cross Branch do not go door to door and ask for a cash donation. If you wish to contribute to this organization their contact information and donation process and policies can be found online.
In addition Police discovered that numerous residents were solicited in these communities and they posted this information on Facebook. This social media platform is good for communicating between and with friends however the Huronia West OPP would like to remind residents that a far better way to ensure your concerns about criminal activity is heard by Police is to contact us directly.

The Huronia West OPP also reminds the public to be cautious when being approached by persons who may be requesting funds for one reason or another. Always ask for their identification and if they claim to be a charitable organization ask for the organization charitable organization number. Don’t be afraid to ask for written proof and a call back number that will allow you to take the time to think over any donation and time to check out if the canvasser is legitimate.
